The plot: Kayla (Moretz) is a scrounger looking for a job she sneaks into one of New York’s most exclusive hotels to try and crash the buffet she ends up getting a job there by stealing someone else’s resumé. If there’s any value to “Tom & Jerry” (in theaters and on HBO Max) at all, it would be as a babysitter for the stuck-at-home under-10 set, allowing mom and dad to sneak out to the backyard a for a little peace and quiet for an hour and 41 minutes. That’s where Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Colin Jost and Ken Jeong come in, slumming it in an inane mess called “Tom & Jerry” and burdened with a creaky plot that would barely prop up a half-hour sitcom.
So Warner Bros., which now owns the property created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1940 for MGM, decided to go all “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” on us, and mix live action and animation. Tom and Jerry are two of the most beloved classic cartoon characters - like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, they are relics from the Golden Age studio era, and decades later still can bring a smile to this overgrown child’s face.īut there is an inherent problem with the concept of a feature film version of their endless cat-vs.-mouse war, and that is they don’t talk.
